Scotch Bonnet Pepper Seeds – Papa Dreadie Select

Discover the legacy of Papa Dreadie Select, a renowned Scotch Bonnet line made famous by the late Erin “Papa Dreadie” Mason, a passionate chilehead, musician, and longtime member of TheHotPepper forum.

Erin’s love for Scotch Bonnets was forged through years spent traveling and living in Jamaica, beginning in the early 1980s. Immersed in the culture, food, and agriculture, he sought out the finest Bonnets he could find, staying with local families, learning from home cooks, and experiencing regional variations firsthand. From bustling markets to remote countryside gardens, where “Old Granny” might call her prized pods “dem da goat peppa,” Erin developed a deep understanding of what makes a true Scotch Bonnet exceptional: proper shape, aroma, and unmistakable flavor.

However, the Papa Dreadie Select line itself was not collected in Jamaica. The original seeds were shared with Erin by a fellow grower named Tony from Florida, who had labeled them as “culled” Scotch Bonnet seeds, meaning they came from his best pods. Erin, recognizing their quality and potential, renamed them “Select” and took on the responsibility of refining and preserving the line.

Through years of careful growing and selection, Erin stabilized these peppers to match the traditional Scotch Bonnet profile he had come to respect so deeply, true bonnet-shaped pods, vibrant yellow-orange color, and that signature intensely fruity, aromatic heat. While he didn’t create the line from scratch, his dedication ensured it stayed true to form, and his influence is what ultimately made Papa Dreadie Select legendary among growers.

These rare seeds produce vigorous, high-yielding plants with classic Scotch Bonnet pods that shine in jerk marinades, hot sauces, and authentic Caribbean dishes.

Why Papa Dreadie Select stands out:

  • True-to-form Scotch Bonnet characteristics, no off-types and no modern hybrid drift
  • Intensely aromatic and flavorful, that authentic Caribbean profile Erin championed
  • Carefully preserved lineage, refined and stabilized through years of dedicated selection

Grow a piece of pepper history with Papa Dreadie Select, a line not just discovered, but recognized, refined, and made iconic through Erin Mason’s passion and experience.

100% germination when my seeds from 2 other vendors had 0%. Could be it luck? Or could it be pepper fundamentals?🤔

These are the best Scotch Bonnet’s I’ve ever had. Better than MOA or any other yellow out there. Crazy meaty for sauce. Unreal on some Ox tail and Beef Patty.
